I was approached by SPIN to illustrate this piece for an album review of, non other than our home town favorites “The Flaming Lips” (small world) for SPIN’s Oct. Issue which hit stands this week.
I just picked up my copies tonight!!
Looking forward to more editorial commissions like this, it was a lot fun!

I was part of an interactive painting activity on the 12th called September Fest held every year in OKC at the Governor’s mansion. The kids came in waves, one minute I was alone then a wave of eager painters rolled up. I think it was educational for all involved myself included and it was definitely creative.
It’s always neat to see children run off inspired. I also found it an extremely interesting time to watch parents, parent in all the different ways one can do so. From really helping their child to relax pick up a brush and just express themselves to the parents who obliviously shut their kids down by barking too many limiting rules or ideas at them. This observation of watching a few children shut down and not paint at all, due to comments made by the parent then followed by the parent stating something along the lines of “but little Suzy don’t you want to paint?” directly affected how I went about mentoring the rest of the day.
I didn’t anticipate this opportunity of societal observation when taking the job, but it was a nice bonus as far as I’m concerned.
